What is an Antique? While many things are casually referred to as antique, technically only things that are 100 years or older are antiques. That doesn't mean anything that's more than 100 years old is desirable, or that things less than 100 years old are necessarily less desirable. Antiques should not be confused with antiquities, which is a term for objects from Antiquity, especially the civilizations of Greece and Rome, Ancient Egypt and the other ancient cultures.

What is Vintage? At the Garage we call vintage anything 25 years or older. 1990 or older makes you vintage 🙂

Is Everything Old Vintage? Everything old has a vintage.The items that end up in vintage shows are not just old, however. They have been curated by dealers and are generally things that well-represent the period of time they came from.There are lots of things made in any given period of time, but the things we exhibitors call vintage are the best examples. Quality materials and demand matter. Age doesn't always equal value.

Are Antiques Considered Art? Sometimes. Many higher quality antiques are considered to have been made by people who were very good at their craft and have significant artistic value. Some think this category is limited to the earlier, hand-made pieces. However, many later pieces which are not entirely hand-crafted are also collected by museums and houses in decorative arts galleries.

What is Midcentury Modern? Midcentury is generally considered sleek, retro and modern in style. Styles from the 40's, 50's and 60's are Midcentury, but you'll see some early 70's in this category as well. Architecture, design and urban development was taking off during this time period and made quite an impact on American society. In the vintage world there is nothing hotter, especially in Chicago, than Midcentury. Vintage Garage Chicago. Chicago's only all vintage market.  What is Art Deco?  The Art Deco period is widely considered to be from the mid-20's through the 30's. The French had gotten wise to how cool the Art Deco style was several years before this. You can see roots of the Art Deco era in France. It is angular and architectural in style. Building was hot in the US during the 20's and 30's and the style was Modernist with Art Deco written all over it. This style paved the way for the lines of Midcentury Modern in the 40's and 60's.
